We are getting something terribly wrong. We need a new mass movement that bears witness to a right way of living on our finite, life-giving planet.

Humans & Nature: The Right Relationship

However, to examine whether there is a link requires research of its breadth and underlying mechanisms from an interdisciplinary approach. This article begins by reviewing the debates concerning the human—nature relationship, which are then critiqued and redefined from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is argued that using an interdisciplinary perspective can facilitate a deeper understanding of the complexities involved for attaining optimal health at the human—environmental interface. During the last century, research has been increasingly drawn toward understanding the human—nature relationship 1 , 2 and has revealed the many ways humans are linked with the natural environment 3. Such connection has underpinned a host of theoretical and empirical research in fields, which until now have largely remained as separate entities.

Such connection has underpinned a host of theoretical and empirical research in fields, which until now have largely remained as separate entities. Since the late nineteenth century a number of descriptive models have attempted to encapsulate the dimensions of human and ecosystem health as well as their interrelationships. Each, however, have not fully incorporated all relevant dimensions, balancing between the biological, social, and spatial perspectives 17 ,

To understand the context of the WASH sector you need to understand the nature of the interactions between us as human beings and our environment. Humans need to interact with the environment to obtain our food, water, fuel, medicines, building materials and many other things. Advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the environment for our benefit, but we have also introduced pollution and caused environmental damage. The impact of environmental problems on humans is significant, affecting all human activities, including health and socio-economic development.

Natural resource management NRM is the management of natural resources such as land , water , soil , plants and animals , with a particular focus on how management affects the quality of life for both present and future generations stewardship. Natural resource management deals with managing the way in which people and natural landscapes interact. It brings together natural heritage management, land use planning, water management, bio-diversity conservation , and the future sustainability of industries like agriculture , mining , tourism , fisheries and forestry. It recognises that people and their livelihoods rely on the health and productivity of our landscapes, and their actions as stewards of the land play a critical role in maintaining this health and productivity.

Every one of us is sustained by various kinds of natural resources — such as food, materials, and energy that are harvested or otherwise extracted from the environment. Our need for those resources is absolute — we cannot survive without them. Moreover, the same is true of all other species — every organism is a component of an ecosystem that provides the means of subsistence. Collectively, the needs and activities of people comprise a human economy. That economy operates at various scales, ranging from an individual person, to a family, to communities such as towns and cities, nation-states such as Canada , and ultimately the global human enterprise.

Learning about the role of natural resources allows for the development of more sustainable methods to manage resources and make sure that they are maintained for future generations.
