In , she moved to Paris where she lived with her brother Leo until In , she met Alice B. Toklas who became Stein's lifelong companion in a lesbian relationship. During these years, Stein and her brother amassed a large collection of Cubist art and befriended many artists including Picasso, who painted Stein's portrait. During the First World War, Stein was a volunteer driver for the French hospitals, which later honored her for her services.
