There are three physical properties of fluids that are particularly important: density, viscosity, and surface tension. Each of these will be defined and viewed briefly in terms of molecular concepts, and their dimensions will be examined in terms of mass, length, and time M, L, and T. The physical properties depend primarily on the particular fluid. For liquids, viscosity also depends strongly on the temperature; for gases, viscosity is approximately proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature. The density of gases depends almost directly on the absolute pressure; for most other cases, the effect of pressure on physical properties can be disregarded.

Capillarity - or capillary action - is the ability of a narrow tube to draw a liquid upwards against the force of gravity. Capillarity, like surface tension, decreases with increasing temperature. The temperature variation, however, is small and insignificant in most problems. Capillarity rise in clean circular glass tubes for distilled water, fresh water and mercury at temperature 20 o C 68 o F :. Capillarity , rise or depression of a liquid in a small passage such as a tube of small cross-sectional area, like the spaces between the fibres of a towel or the openings in a porous material. Capillarity is not limited to the vertical direction. Water is drawn into the fibres of a towel, no matter how the towel is oriented. Liquids that rise in small-bore tubes inserted into the liquid are said to wet the tube, whereas liquids that are depressed within thin tubes below the surface of the surrounding liquid do not wet the tube. Water is a liquid that wets glass capillary tubes; mercury is one that does not. When wetting does not occur, capillarity does not occur.

When the surface of water is curved at nanoscale as a bubble, droplet and meniscus, its surface tension is expected to be smaller than that of planar interface, which still awaits experimental studies.

Capillary action

Most curricular materials in TeachEngineering are hierarchically organized; i. Some activities or lessons, however, were developed to stand alone, and hence, they might not conform to this strict hierarchy. Related Curriculum shows how the document you are currently viewing fits into this hierarchy of curricular materials. Surface tension in soap film causes the characteristic spherical shape of soap bubbles.

Capillary action sometimes capillarity , capillary motion , capillary effect , or wicking is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. The effect can be seen in the drawing up of liquids between the hairs of a paint-brush, in a thin tube, in porous materials such as paper and plaster, in some non-porous materials such as sand and liquefied carbon fiber , or in a biological cell. It occurs because of intermolecular forces between the liquid and surrounding solid surfaces. If the diameter of the tube is sufficiently small, then the combination of surface tension which is caused by cohesion within the liquid and adhesive forces between the liquid and container wall act to propel the liquid. The first recorded observation of capillary action was by Leonardo da Vinci. Boyle then reported an experiment in which he dipped a capillary tube into red wine and then subjected the tube to a partial vacuum. He found that the vacuum had no observable influence on the height of the liquid in the capillary, so the behavior of liquids in capillary tubes was due to some phenomenon different from that which governed mercury barometers.

Capillary action is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, is the liquid-air surface tension (force/unit length), θ is the contact angle, ρ is the density of liquid (mass/volume), g is the local acceleration due to gravity "Evaporation limited radial capillary penetration in porous media" (PDF).
