Habitat degradation and hunting have caused the widespread loss of larger vertebrate species defaunation from tropical biodiversity hotspots. However, these defaunation drivers impact vertebrate biodiversity in different ways and, therefore, require different conservation interventions. We conducted landscape-scale camera-trap surveys across six study sites in Southeast Asia to assess how moderate degradation and intensive, indiscriminate hunting differentially impact tropical terrestrial mammals and birds.

The selective nature of trophy hunting may cause changes in desirable phenotypic traits in harvested species. A decline in trophy size of preferred species may reduce hunting destination competitiveness thus compromising the sustainability of trophy hunting as a conservation tool. We explored the trophy quality and trends in harvesting patterns i. We used long-term data on horn and tusk size, age, quota size allocation and offtake levels of selected species. To analyse the effect of year, area and age on the trophy size, quota size and offtake levels, we used linear mixed models.

The datasets supporting this article have been uploaded as part of the electronic supplementary material. There is increasing evidence of indirect effects of hunting on populations. In species with sexually selected infanticide SSI , hunting may decrease juvenile survival by increasing male turnover. We aimed to evaluate the relative importance of direct and indirect effects of hunting via SSI on the population dynamics of the Scandinavian brown bear Ursus arctos. We performed prospective and retrospective demographic perturbation analyses for periods with low and high hunting pressures. Hunting had negative indirect effects on the population through an increase in SSI, which lowered cub survival and possibly also fecundity rates. Our study suggests that SSI could explain

Tourism brings both positive and negative impacts on tourist destinations. The traditionally-described domains of tourism impacts are economic , socio-cultural , and environmental dimensions. At the same time, tourism also brings positive and negative health outcomes for local people. Global tourism in contributed 3.

This study makes an explorative overview on two main research topics in economics of wildlife management: determination of population sizes and policy design. The results point out a large and comprehensive research on each of these issues, in particular on the estimation of values and costs of wildlife, where this information is necessary for the determination of population size. A drawback is that most of the value and cost studies do not relate their estimates to wildlife population size, which limits their usability for efficient policy design.

Elephants kept appearing in wrinkled herds, loitering near the dusty pans, in search of water. With the September temperature pushing a hundred degrees at midday, the pachyderms were moving at the edge of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia in a community-run wildlife reserve, or conservancy, called Nyae Nyae, where roughly 2, San people live today in unyielding conditions. The elephants left snapped branches and warm scat in their wake. When they caught our scent, our sweat mixing with the sun-scorched grasses, they broke into a trumpeting jog and were gone. Later, more materialized on the horizon, in the shade of the camel thorn trees, shades themselves.

Беккер позвонил одному из своих коллег: - Тебе что-нибудь известно об Агентстве национальной безопасности.

Impacts of tourism

Positive and Negative Impacts associated with Non-Consumptive Wildlife Tourism
