4 Types of Memory: Sensory, Short-Term, Working & Long-Term

Due to increasing changes in demographics, maintaining cognitive functioning later in life has become both economic and social concerns, and thus finding a cost-effective solution is one of the priorities in research. Factors like physical and intellectual activities have been associated with better cognitive performance in later life. While several studies have considered the impact of short-term physical activity interventions on cognitive functioning, retrospective research focusing on life-time physical activity experience has been sparse. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between memory performance and whole brain matter integrity in seniors with different regular life-long physical activity experience. Measures of memory, physical activity and whole brain matter integrity were obtained and analysed. The obtained results indicated no significant relationship between physical activity experience and short and long-term memory and whole brain matter integrity; however, brain matter integrity was significantly correlated with demographic factors like age and education.

Short Term Memory

People have several different kinds of memory, including sensory, short-term, working and long-term. Here's how they differ from each other, as well as how they're affected by Alzheimer's disease. Sensory memory is a very brief about three seconds recall of a sensory experience, such as what we just saw or heard. Some compare sensory memory to a quick snapshot of what you just experienced that quickly disappears. Short-term memory is that brief period of time where you can recall information you were just exposed to. Short-term often encompasses anywhere from 30 seconds to a few days, depending on who is using the term. Some researchers use the term working memory and distinguish it from short-term memory, though the two overlap.

What are the differences between long-term, short-term, and working memory?

Early studies of memory-impaired patients with medial temporal lobe MTL damage led to the view that the hippocampus and related MTL structures are involved in the formation of long-term memory and that immediate memory and working memory are independent of these structures. This traditional idea has recently been revisited. Impaired performance in patients with MTL lesions on tasks with short retention intervals, or no retention interval, and neuroimaging findings with similar tasks have been interpreted to mean that the MTL is sometimes needed for working memory and possibly even for visual perception itself. We present a reappraisal of this interpretation.

In the recent literature there has been considerable confusion about the three types of memory: long-term, short-term, and working memory.
