Nonetheless she is in love with John, a dissolute young doctor who she has known since childhood. Their relationship effects dramatic changes in their respective philosophies but Fate decrees that they always cross each others lives at the wrong time and thus remain estranged from each other. The following scene, from the prologue when Alma and John are children, foreshadows the characterizations and the mood of the play.
