Eliot argues that a great poem always asserts and that the poet must develop a sense of the pastness of the past. There is great importance of tradition in the present poem. Tradition should not be inherited but should be obtained by great labor. Past should be altered by present as much as the present is directed by past. It involves a historical sense that is really essential for any work of art.

The essay was first published in The Egoist and later in Eliot's first book of criticism, "The Sacred Wood" While Eliot is most often known for his poetry, he also contributed to the field of literary criticism. It formulates Eliot's influential conception of the relationship between the poet and preceding literary tradition. Content of the essay This essay is divided into three parts: firstly, the concept of "Tradition," then, the Theory of Impersonal Poetry, and finally the conclusion. Home Issues 2 Aesthetics of Theory in the Moder The Feeling of Thought: T. The provocative tone of T. But Eliot has never ceased underlining the capacity of poetry to deliver its own poetics, on a mode which allows a sensory approach to thought and meaning and prevents closure. In many of his essays, Eliot tried to define his poetics and to set his aesthetic standards.

That it continues to exert a genuine influence on thought regarding the interrelationship among literary classics, individual artists, and the nature of the creative imagination, is a comment on its value. In any case, Eliot was able to let loose in this comparatively short essay—it runs to little more than 3, words—packing virtually every sentence with pronouncements that, in any other context of presentation, might have required far more elaboration and persuasive defense. He comments as well, finally, on how much or how greatly a work of literature ought to be regarded as giving expression to the personality of the poet, giving birth to the impersonal theory of poetry. While his essay may not have initiated the powerful reaction to romanticism that is now thought of as literary modernism, the essay certainly gave that movement voice and a clear agenda. In keeping with an analytical approach, Eliot structures his central argument around various issues of separation.
