Peace and Conflict Studies - B.A.
Peace and Conflict Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study with a commitment to the non-violent management and resolution of conflict from the local to the international level. To pursue this goal, core political concepts such as power, order, violence and justice are theorized in distinctive ways. This course develops an understanding of key theoretical approaches in peace and conflict studies research, and enables students to understand the relevance of theory to practice in this field. Students will engage in critical dialogue on questions such as how we identify actors in peace and in conflict, and how we can work against differing forms of violence and reconstitute just and participatory social and political order in the wake of violence. As everybody knows, war and peace transform themselves into each other All contradictory things are interconnected, and they not only coexist in an entity under certain conditions-this is the whole meaning of the identity of contradictions. Where the boundary is drawn is not so important as the machinery by which the system stays within it wherever it is drawn. Most conflict systems exhibit what might be called a "Break boundary" at which the system suddenly changes into another or passes some point of no return in its dynamic processes. Thus, marital conflict may lead to separation or divorce, industrial conflict may lead to strikes, personal conflicts may lead to fisticuffs at the lower end of the social scale or to litigation at the upper end, and international relations may degenerate into war.

Peace and Conflict Studies
The first program dates to at Indiana's Manchester College. Unlike ever-narrowing specialization that has occurred in some fields, Peace Studies has expanded inexorably since then. From its international focus on understanding and preventing the roots of war and the spread of nuclear weapons, it now encompasses the promotion of human rights, justice, individual rights and well-being, and much more. Sixty years ago, the pursuit of peace was widely viewed as the province of international diplomacy and the understanding of war was often presumed to be inseparable from military history. Now, we have Track Two diplomacy and a wide variety of approaches to understanding war. Bellicose conflict over natural resources has an ancient history, but in the same decades that mark the emergence then expansion of Peace Studies, terms like "water security" and "food security" have become familiar; they suggest how such basic needs affect the balance between danger and safety, war and peace. The abuse of children and women has an equally ancient history, but society's intervention through mandates for doctors to report abuse is similarly recent; perhaps care givers will one day be obligated to report the abuse of elders.
